Everyone is showing off their tellies in Berlin. Big ones, too. IFA, the annual consumer electronics show held in the German capital is underway, and it seems that all of the big players are touting next generation screens.

Well, I didn’t manage to let you know how the analyses went. Our blood and hair were dismal failures – I guess our samples weren’t good enough. But the yeast mutants were great and worked very well - as did an analysis of what are called HeLa cells. These are astonishing cells - they originally came from a Baltimore woman called Henrietta Lacks (HeLa) who died back in 1951 of cervical cancer. But the cells from her tumour have been growing and multiplying in research labs all over the world ever since - so many, in fact, that it's estimated that collectively they now weigh far more than she herself ever did. They've been making a tremendous difference to cancer research for over half a century.

Well, it’s almost quarter to eleven at night and I’ve only just got out of the lab – having started this morning at 8.30am. No-one said this fellowship was going to be easy – or short hours!

Just returned from a week's skiing where contrary to the flurry of dour snow forecasts, there was plenty of the fluffy white stuff (although I think we got lucky).
